Guiding the Future of the Fourth Street Preserve
The Fourth Street Preserve is more than just open space—it’s a sanctuary for native wildlife, a place for the community to connect with nature, and a lasting commitment to conservation for generations to come. Preservation efforts are guided by careful study, expert insights, and a vision for sustainable land stewardship.
Understanding the Landscape
Before shaping the future of the Preserve, it’s essential to first understand the land, its biodiversity, and its ecological needs. A BioBlitz led by Master Naturalist Scott Wilkinson is cataloging native flora and fauna while identifying invasive species that threaten the ecosystem. This foundational research informs decisions about habitat restoration and long-term preservation efforts.
The Vision for the Preserve
With insights from the studies, landscape architect Rodney Robinson designed a site plan balancing conservation with thoughtful accessibility.
Native Plantings Will Restore the Preserve
A variety of native plant species have been carefully selected to reestablish the land’s natural beauty and ecological integrity which will support the three elements to a healthy forest: ground level plantings, tree structure and canopy. Additionally, these plantings will play a vital role in:
- Supporting local wildlife
- Improving soil and water quality
- Attracting native pollinators like bees, butterflies, and birds
- Ensuring the health and resilience of the forest for decades to come
